A rock musician reduced to playing weddings but happy with his lot meets a former boy band star who steals one of his songs – out in UK cinemas on Friday, May 29th

High heeled feet head for the dance floor. “Cel – e – brate Good Times – Come On.” The happy couple are enjoying themselves. You seem like a good crowd, says the frontman Rick (Paul Rudd from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Jeff Rowe, Kyler Spears, 2023; Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Jason Reitman, 2021; Ant-man, Peyton Reed, 2015), of the standards band (Rory Keenan from The Guard, John Michael McDonagh, 2011; Ella Enchanted, Tommy O’Haver, 2004; Reign of Fire, Rob Bowman, 2002; Keith McErlean from Flora and Son, 2023, Sing Street, 2016, both John Carney; Paul Reid from Flora and Son). In Rick’s mind, he and his band are on a night stage at a music festival playing to a vast, enthusiastic and indeed magical crowd holding smartphone torch lights. A schoolgirl on an internship is appallingly exploited by her employers, and a police detective is called in to investigate – out in UK cinemas on Friday, June 14th

Here’s a film which presents a real problem for reviewers. Something monumental happens in the middle of the film which entirely changes it. It’s a little bit like the shift from the traumatic drama to the police manhunt in High and Low (Akira Kurosawa, 1963) and a bit like the infamous shower scene in the middle of Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960). And yet, the film is like neither of those classics in any other way (except, perhaps, the fact that it’s a remarkable film that will leave you with an indelible impression afterwards). Still, how much can a reviewer give away without ruining the film for audiences?

It’s very much a film of two halves. The first half centres around Sohee (Kim Se-eun), a star pupil at an average secondary school. She is obsessed with dancing, specifically the kind of dance moves associated with K-pop girl- and boy-bands. The Moon Thieves

A gang including a counterfeit watchmaker and an amateur safe cracker attempt to steal a watch worn by an astronaut on the 1969 moon landing – out in UK cinemas on Friday, February 23rd

This heist movie is built around three members of hugely popular Cantopop boy band Mirror: Anson Lo, Edan Lui and Keung To. Vincent Ma (Lui) is a watchmaker who builds counterfeit (i.e. non-brand name) watches out of genuine parts. He takes great pride in his work and his watches are very reliable as a result. Yoh (Lo) desperately needs money to pay for the operation that will save the ailing eyesight of his mom Ms. Hong (Luna Shaw), so he signs up to work with the ruthless young crime boss heir known simply as Uncle (Keung) despite the fact that Yoh’s elder brother was previously killed by gangsters, so he ought to know better.

Uncle has enlisted Ma to look at three watches in Tokyo that might be worth stealing – he is to take them apart, examine their insides and confirm as to whether or not they are genuine.… Read the rest
