In kabuki theatre, an onnagata is a man who performs women’s roles, following the banning of women performing in kabuki by the shogunate, who feared it would result in moral decline, in the 17th century.

In 1964, as the snow falls outside, a large, new year restaurant meal for his yakuza family in Nagasaki turns into a pivotal event for teenager Kikuo Tachibana (Soya Kurokawa from Monster, Hirokazu Kore-eda, 2023), for two reasons. One, he is able to perform as an onnagata in a kabuki play, The Snowbound Barrier, for visiting celebrity actor Hanai Hanjiro (Ken Watanabe from Fukushima 50, Setsuro Wakamatsu, 2020; Pokemon; Detective Pikachu, Rob Letterman, 2019; Inception, Christopher Nolan, 2010; Letters from Iwo Jima, Clint Eastwood, 2006; Tampopo, Juzo Itami, 1985); two, a rival yakuza group bursts in and wipes out his family. An aspiring journalist in 1982 England delves into her mother’s past life in 1952 Nagasaki and unearths dark family secrets – out in UK cinemas on Friday, March 13th

As will be seen from the above logline description, this essentially plays out in two timelines.

One is in Nagasaki, Japan in 1952, less than a decade after the dropping of the atomic bomb, where the married and barely visibly pregnant Etsuko (Suzo Hirose from Lupin III the First, Takashi Yamazaki, 2019; The Third Murder, Hirokazu Kore-eda, 2017; The Boy and the Beast, Mamoru Hosoda, 2015; Our Little Sister, Hirokazu Kore-eda, 2015) befriends Sachiko (Fumi Nikaido from River’s Edge, Isao Yukisada, 2018; Himizu, Sion Sono, 2011), the mother of local waif Mariko (Mio Suzuki), who lives in an isolated shack near the river and plans to emigrate to the US with a man named ‘Frank’.

Aided by a man turned into a mobile, talking, three-legged chair, a schoolgirl must prevent giant, freak weather ‘worms’ from devastating Japan with earthquakes – anime feature is out in UK and Irish cinemas on Friday, April 14th

Prompted by a question from a man she meets on a road in her hometown, 17-year-old schoolgirl Suzume visits an abandoned hot springs facility in which is situated a door in a free standing door frame. She opens it only to find she can’t enter. Shortly after this, in school, she notices smoke in a gigantic, red and black worm-like form rising from the hot springs facility.

At the same time, everyone around her receives earthquake warnings on their smartphones, but no-one else can see the rising form. She goes back to the facility to find the man she met trying to close the door and cut off the incoming smoke, something she helps him to do.
