After her father dies, a 19-year-old girl without means accepts an offer of marriage from a wealthy suitor, becoming his fourth wife – back out in UK cinemas on Friday, November 6th

Northern China, the 1920s. The father of 19-year-old Songlian (Gong Li) dies, leaving her without the means to pay for college. She therefore accepts an offer of marriage to the wealthy Chen (Ma Jingwu). He’s fifty, and she’s his fourth wife. The first wife, Yuru (Jin Suyuan), has lost the master’s interest having aged. The second, Zhuoyun (Cao Cuifeng), is a constant schemer. The third, Meishan (He Saifei), is a former Opera star.

Each bride has her own house within the compound. Whichever house the master wishes to stay at at night is marked by the hanging of lit, red lanterns in the courtyard outside. The wife of the house where the red lantern is raised enjoys other privileges such as being allowed to choose her own menu at meal times. A man suspects his wife is having an affair, hires a private detective, and then acts upon what emerges… – back out in UK cinemas on Friday, September 11th; Claude Chabrol – Elements of Crime, a season of the director’s films, plays at BFI Southbank from Tuesday, September 1st to Tuesday, October 6th 2026.

Charles Desvallées (Michel Bouquet from Just Before Nightfall, 1971; Cop au Vin, 1985, both Claude Chabrol; The Bride Wore Black, François Truffaut, 1966) lives outside Paris with his wife Hélène (Stéphane Audran, then the director’s wife, from Les Biches, 1968, Le Boucher, 1970, both Claude Chabrol; Babette’s Feast, Gabriel Axel, 1987) and pre-teenage son Michel (Stéphane Di Napoli from Que la Bête Meure, Claude Chabrol, 1969).

He works in an office in Paris, to which he commutes by car. She often goes into town, for instance to get her hair done or visit the cinema. Following treatment by a faith healer, two gay teen lovers are stalked by a being that for each of them resembles the other – out in UK cinemas on Wednesday, September 2nd

This is at once a drama and a supernatural horror movie made from a gay perspective. At no point (unless I missed it) does the film refer to anyone or anything called Leviticus. Perhaps that’s the name of the monster (who is not named in the film). Perhaps it’s a reference to the Book of Leviticus in the Bible – possibly not such a stretch since key plot elements involve a local, fundamentalist Christian church community – and such gathered groups tend to believe the Bible to be true word for word (rather than, say, using it as a text to be read and engaged with, taking into account its historical context and trying to make sense of it in today’s world).

Naim (Joe Bird from Talk to Me, Danny & Michael Philippou, 2022) and Ryan (Stacy Clausen) hang out together in the area around their small outback town. Naim is unnerved by the sight of a snake digesting a toad.… Read the rest
