After her father dies, a 19-year-old girl without means accepts an offer of marriage from a wealthy suitor, becoming his fourth wife – back out in UK cinemas on Friday, November 6th

Northern China, the 1920s. The father of 19-year-old Songlian (Gong Li) dies, leaving her without the means to pay for college. She therefore accepts an offer of marriage to the wealthy Chen (Ma Jingwu). He’s fifty, and she’s his fourth wife. The first wife, Yuru (Jin Suyuan), has lost the master’s interest having aged. The second, Zhuoyun (Cao Cuifeng), is a constant schemer. The third, Meishan (He Saifei), is a former Opera star.

Each bride has her own house within the compound. Whichever house the master wishes to stay at at night is marked by the hanging of lit, red lanterns in the courtyard outside. The wife of the house where the red lantern is raised enjoys other privileges such as being allowed to choose her own menu at meal times. In this small world of these four women, intrigues develop as they attempt to win from their rivals the master’s favour by whatever means they can think of, fair or foul.… Read the rest

A mole in a small National Security department is narrowed down to one of two operatives… But which one of the two is it?– high tech surveillance thriller is out in UK cinemas on Friday, February 20th

A National Security operation involving numerous operatives and frankly overwhelming high tech surveillance technology is tracking Nathan (Nathaniel Boyd) who is receiving a package from a contact on the street. A fast and furious attempt to catch him involving numerous officers, notably Yan Di (Jackson Yee from Resurrection, Bi Gan, 2025; The Battle at Lake Changjin, Chen Kaige, Dante Lam, Tsui Hark, 2021; Better Days, Derek Tsang, 2019) and Hwang Du (Zhu Yilong from Dongji Rescue, Fei Zhenxiang, Guan Hu, 2025; Only the River Flows, Wei Shujun, 2023; Lost in the Stars, Cui Rui, Liu Xiang, 2022), goes badly wrong when drone operator Chen Yi (Lin Bo Yang) accidentally steers her drone into an operative causing him to fall from a great height. The Story Of Looking

A highly personal film essay on the importance and significance of our visual senses – out in cinemas and on rental on BFI Player and Curzon Home Cinema from Friday, September 17th

This opens with archive interview footage of musician Ray Charles, blind since losing his sight in childhood, asked about whether he’d like to have sight back. He says no – he’s already seen the things he needs to see and can picture them – the stars, his mother. And when he hears the news, there are a lot of things he frankly is glad he can’t see, and feels sorry for all the people who can. Pushed as to whether he’d like to be able to see for just one day, he’d less sure, responding with a guarded “maybe”.

This footage appears to be a touchstone for film-maker Cousins, who constantly refers back to it in this film essay. Another pertinent, recurring image is a man standing on a row of chimney pots. If we could see through his eyes, what would we see?

Cousins has spent a life looking at things, firstly as a human being with a visual leaning, then later on professionally as a film maker.… Read the rest
