Two people on the one hand meant for one another and on the other probably shouldn’t go anywhere near each other – disaster romance was released in the UK on Wednesday, November 21st 2012

Back in the outside world after eight months in a mental hospital, Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper) is beset by anger management problems. He only has to hear a few bars of Stevie Wonder’s My Cherie Amour, and he’s trashing the waiting room of psychiatrist Dr.Patel (Anupam Kher from Bend It Like Beckham, Gurinda Chadha, 2002) whilst plunged into memories of walking in on his then wife Nikki (Brea Bee) in the shower with another man.

So now he’s living at home with his Philadelphia Eagles fan, inveterate gambler and small businessman father Pat Solitano Sr. (Robert De Niro) and his supportive mother Dolores (Jacki Weaver from Memoir of a Snail, Adam Elliot, 2024; Animal Kingdom, David Michod, 2010; Picnic at Hanging Rock, Peter Weir, 1975).

Pat wants to win his wife back, but since she has a restraining order on him, that’s unlikely to happen. After burning a body in an isolated farmhouse, Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) gets work with travelling carnival showman Clem (Willem Dafoe) via midget The Major (Mark Povinelli) and strongman Bruno (Ron Perlman). He soon ingratiates himself with mind reader Zeena (Toni Collette) who lets him into some of the secrets of her trade, but romantically he’s more interested in Molly (Rooney Mara) with whom, despite opposition from her unofficial guardian Bruno, he runs away intent on working a lucrative act on a wealthier audience to make larger amounts of money.

One night, during a residency at a hotel, Stanton and Molly’s show is interrupted by a woman (Cate Blanchett) trying to expose him as a fraud. Successfully navigating her heckling, he convinces Judge Kimball (Peter MacNeill) that he is in contact with the Judge’s dead son. Boy meets girl in San Fernando Valley, 1973, a bizarre, meandering tale constantly firing off in new directions – out in cinemas on Saturday, January 1st

Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) is walking along an outdoor school corridor when he sees Alona Kane (Alona Haim), contriving to run into her. She’s much older than him (she’s actually there helping out with individual pupil photos) and pours scorn on his attempts to ask her out for a date. But he’s persistent and possessed of a way with words, talking her into turning up at the restaurant should she feel like it, which she duly does.

When he proclaims himself an actor with some films and TV series to his credit, she assumes he’s joking around, but, no, it’s true. Needing a chaperone for a new your gig he’d otherwise be unable to attend, he gives her the job. He also has his own PR company whose clients include a Japanese restaurant, has a good head for business, and is constantly chasing the latest coming trend as a means to make a fast buck.

To attempt more of a synopsis is difficult because the whole thing feels like scenes from a much longer script where lot of other scenes have been either edited out in the cutting room or possibly not even shot in the first place.… Read the rest
